      Enclosed explanation: Stone wall encloses Julia Hoeffding's grave. Others are outside the wall.

      First burial: 1886.

      Miscellaneous information: Julia Hoeffding was mother of UNC Professor, Wassily Hoeffding a Finnish statistician and probabilist. Hoeffding was one of the founders of nonparametric statistics, Julia Hoeffding is buried on what was the property of George Nicholson, a fellow UNC mathematician. It is believed that Wassily Hoeffdings ashes were also buried here.

      1870 Census shows farmer Edward J. Powell, wife Perlina and son William T. 1880 shows Edward J., Perlina, William Thomas, and mother-in-law Elizabeth Riggsbee.

      • Husband of Perlina Powell. "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. Matt 5:8" "Gone Home". A finger pointing to Heaven on top of stone.
  4. Powell, Perlina   (b. 13 Dec 1843 - d. 17 May 1922)
      • Wife of Edward J. Powell. Daughter of Tom Riggsbee and Elizabeth Riggsbee. "Tho lost to sight, to memory dear". Footstone: PP. Death certificate gives date of death as 17 May 1921. Marker has 1922.
