      Location - Oakland Township. 0.5 mile west of SR 1953, Chatham Church Road, 0.4 mile north of Chatham United Methodist Church. Follow lane into woods, cemetery is west of lane.

      On 31 August 1989 and 5 October 1989, twenty-one (21) grave markers were recorded and more than eight (8) field stones were noted by Will and Audrey Heiser.

      The Thomas A. Clegg Family
      Thomas A. Clegg (1767-1827) and his wife, Bridget (Polk) Clegg (1772-1859), moved to Chatham County 22 October 1789. Their home was about 4 miles south of Pittsboro, North Carolina, 1 mile west of US 15-501, and 3/4 mile north of Chatham Church, off SR 1953, Chatham Church Road. This location was on the waters of Indian Creek over a mile north of Rocky River.

      The first noted reference to the cemetery is in Chatham County Deed Book AM - Page 105, dated 8 March 1861 for 274 acres "(excepting the spot of ground known as the `grave yard' and marked by an enclosing rock wall)" transferred from Leonidas J. Merritt, Clerk and Master in Equity for the Court of Equity, Chatham County, to Luther Clegg. This was based on a petition filed by Luther Clegg, et al., against Thomas Clegg, et al.

      Subsequent deeds refer to the cemetery as follows:

      Luther Clegg and wife, C. M. Clegg to Isaac W. Avent, 124 acres "one acre being excepted for the graveyard" and "The plot of land known as the graveyard excepted."

      R. H. Dixon and wife Lucy E. Dixon to S. W. Eddins, 124 acres "the acre known as the graveyard excepted" being the same tract as L. Clegg and wife to I. Avent, recorded 22 May 1896.

      Remarks:
      The first noted legal reference to this cemetery is Chatham County Deed Book AM-105, 8 Mar 1861, for 274 acres transferred to Luther Clegg "(excepting the spot of ground known as the "grave yard" and marked by an enclosing rock wall)." Subsequent deeds refer to "the acre known as the graveyard and excepted" down to Deed Book LS-171, 31 May 1954, transferring 124 acres to Warren D. Grey and his wife Stacie Eddins Grey "save and except for one acre known as the graveyard."

      Thomas A. Clegg, 1767-1827, and his wife, Bridget Polk Clegg, 1712-1859, moved to Chatham County 22 Oct 1789. Their home was about 4 miles south of Pittsboro, 1 mile west of US 15-501, and 3/4 mile north of Chatham Church. This location was on the waters of Indian Creek over one mile north of Rocky River.
