192    MURCHISON - MCLEAN FAMILY

Location - off Hwy 210 about 3 miles south of Lillington, near Hanson Aggregates.

      Coordinates: 35d 21m 30.0s N; 78d 50m 35.1s W Click here for Online Maps

Directions: from downtown Lillington go approximately 4 miles on Highway 210 South. After crossing Little River Bridge the cemetery is on the left in a field just before McNeill-Hobbs Road (SR-2072).. It is presently on land owned by Ellis O'Briant, son of Phillip O'Briant.

The cemetery is called McLean by some but previous generations called it Murchison Cemetery because it was located on land under the control of the Murchison family. There are a number of McLean tombstones but there are other families buried there as well as a number of graves marked only by a stone. There were, heretofore, wooden markers but they are long gone.

Previously, there was a low single chain border that surrounded the cemetery which was erected by Margaret McLean White who was the daughter of William (Billy) McLean (who is buried there in an unmarked grave) and granddaughter of John A. McLean; it is no longer standing.

The big stone marker was erected by McLean cousins who left to live in Bladen County and by Arthur Allen McDonald, son of Catherine Isabel McLean McDonald who is buried at Summerville Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The wording on the monument stone is now known to be referring to the two Lauchlin McLeans (father and son).

Side 1 -- Lauchlin McLean, Husband of Mary McLean. Borned in the Isle of Skye Scotland. Settled near Lillington N.C. about 1770. Married Mary McLean and left the following children. Duncan, Rachel, Mary, Margaret, Catherine, and John Allen.
Side 2 -- Duncan McLean located and died in Bladen County, Rachel married a Johnson and located in Bladen County, Catherine married a Davis and located in Bladen County, Mary Margaret never married, John Allen lived and died On the old homestead.
Side 3 -- Lauchlin McLean and his brothers Daniel and James fought With the Tories against the Patriots and were captured at The Battle of Indian Branch by the Patriots and were Retaken by the Tories on the following day on their memorial March to Hillsboro.
