      • Husband of Marguerite Dobbins Garner. Mr. Fred Hubert Garner, Sr., age 92 of the Deep River Community in Lee County, N.C. passed quietly into Heaven and was surrounded by his three children and other family members. Hubert was born in Union County, S.C. to the late Oscar Walker Garner, Sr. and Lillian Anna Hall Garner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Marguerite Dobbins Garner and siblings Oscar Walker Garner, Jr., Orin Garner, Catherine Morrison, Omega Wood, Hamblin Garner, and Arthur Garner. Hubert served our country in the United States Air Force from 1945-1949 as a member of the WW-II occupation force on the island of Okinawa. He was attached to the 26th Fighter Squadron. After being discharged, Hubert began his education at Mars Hill College earning an A.A. degree in Agricultural Science. He was also a member of the MRC football squad. Hubert then attended Clemson University and earned his B.S. and M.B.S in Agricultural Science. In 1964 Hubert began a long and rewarding career at the fledgling community college initially called Lee County Industrial Education College now known as Central Carolina Community College. While working full time at CCCC, Hubert attended Duke University's night program and earned his ABD in Education. Mr. Garner retired in 1991 after serving as the Dean of Students for over 25 years. Mr. Garner was twice elected to the Lee County Commission Board and served as Chairman for 3 of those years. He was a driving force behind the program known as Highway to Healing, bringing a local chapter of the Salvation Army to Sanford and a long and faithful member of the Rotary Clubs in Sanford. After moving to the Deep River Community Hubert and his family became members of Flat Springs Baptist Church. He served in multiple areas of church life including Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School Director and Sunday School teacher. His personal ministry also included a Trustee for Fruitland Bible College, Board of Directors of the N.C. Baptist Foundation and on the General Board for the Baptist State Convention. Hubert is survived by his children; Fred Hubert Garner and wife Barb of Cary, N.C.; Annell Wilkie and husband Barry of Wilmington, N.C.; Cindy Garner Bryan and husband Jack Bryan, Jr. of Deep River Community and his sister, Joyce Garner Scott of Moore, S.C. Hubert's Grandchildren Matt and Stephanie Garner, Keith Garner, Lauren and Charlie Beaver; Craig and Melissa Wilkie, Kristina and Richard Cutter, Jacob Logan, Andrew Wilkie; Jonathon and Constance Nowell, Amanda Nowell, Raven and Mike Santucci, Patrick and Marybeth Bryan; along with Great Grandchildren Melinda, Emerson, and Adley; Gray, Caleb, Branson, Audrey, Alliyah, and Seth; Dylan, Reese, Jayden, Michael and AnneMarie. Arrangements were handled by Bridges Cameron Funeral Home of Sanford, NC. Services were held at Flat Springs Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

      • Wife of Fred Hubert Garner, Sr. Daughter of Kenneth Miller Dobbins and Nellie Robertson Dobbins. Marguerite Dobbins Garner, age 89, of the Deep River Community, Sanford, NC, died at her home. She was born in Rutherford County, NC to the late Kenneth Miller Dobbins and Nellie Robertson Dobbins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother Lt. Col. Robert Stanley Dobbins. Marguerite was an active member of Flat Springs Baptist Church. She served as the church's choir director for close to 10 years and served as the youth leader. She was a past president of the Women's Missionary Union (WMU) for the church. She is survived by her husband of over 66 years, Fred Hubert Garner, Sr.; son Fred Hubert Garner, Jr. and wife Barbara Jean of Cary, NC; daughters Annell Wilkie-Almand and husband Barry of Wilmington, NC; Cindy Garner Bryan and husband Jack Bryan, Jr. of the Deep River Community of Sanford, NC; grandchildren Matt and Stephanie Garner, Keith Garner, Lauren and Charlie Beaver, Craig and Melissa Wilkie, Kristina and Richard Cutter, Jacob Logan, Andrew Wilkie, Jonathon and Constance Nowell, Amanda Nowell, Raven and Mike Santucci and Patrick and Marybeth Bryan and great-grandchildren Melinda, Emerson, Gray, Caleb, Branson, Audrey, Alliyah, Seth, Dylan, Reese, Jayden and Michael.

      • Former husband of Tammy Harrington. Anthony Gordon Harrington, age 63, of Sanford, NC, died at the First Health Hospice House in Pinehurst. He was born in Lee County to the late John Gordon "Moe" Harrington and Jessie Ruth Cooke Harrington. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Angela Harrington Lawson and twin infant brothers Marvin and Martin. Anthony was the owner and operator of a floral wholesale business "The Plant Man" and was a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church. Anthony was also known as "The Chicken Man" when he worked for Cooke's Poultry. He was a graduate of Deep River High School. He is survived by his two sons Hunter Harrington and fianc‚ Jana Reid, Parker Harrington and their mother Tammy Harrington all of Sanford; a special cousin, that helped care for Anthony, Terri Ammons Pope and husband Vic of Sanford. Anthony had many cousins and friends that will miss him dearly. Arrangements were handled by Bridges Cameron Funeral Home of Sanford, NC. Graveside services were held at Flat Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was born in Chatham County, NC to the late Daniel Washington Dawkins and Maggie Tripp Dawkins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph A. Luck Sr. and three sisters Naomi D. Riddle, Margaret D. Gilmore and Bertha D. Taylor. She is survived by a son Joseph A. Luck Jr. of Sanford, a daughter Martha Luck Masttallone and husband Richard of Pawley's Island, SC; granddaughter Amanda Luck and boyfriend Chris Frye of Charlotte, NC; brother Dan Dawkins and wife Lena of Sanford, NC and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements were handled by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The funeral service was held at Flat Springs Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

She was born in Lee County to the late Curtis Sylvester Kelly and Flora Emma Bridges Kelly. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years James Duncan "JD" McNeill, Jr. and brother Clarence S. Kelly. Nora was a faithful member of Flat Springs Baptist Church and the Ora Bridges Sunday School class. She was the most loving and caring Christian lady who cared about everyone. She is survived by children Ruth Wilder and husband Larry, Sarah McGehee and husband Robert all of Sanford, Gail McNeill Cole of North Myrtle Beach, Jimmy McNeill and wife Libby of Sanford, Karen Maness and husband Ray of High Falls, Sharon Rosser and husband Tim of Sanford; fifteen grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Bridges Cameron Funeral Home of Sanford, NC. Services were held at Flat Springs Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

      • Wife of 1) Henry A. Hight, Jr. and 2) Donald R. Thurkill. Mrs. Doris Norwood Hight Thurkill, age 86, of the Deep River Community of Sanford, N.C., was carried home by the angels on Monday, July 9, 2018. She was born to the late Jack Norwood and Ruby Inez Norwood. She loved her family -- and was a great caregiver for her parents. Her brothers, Arnold and Judson, were dear to her as well. She was a 1950 graduate of Chapel Hill High School. Doris was married to Henry A. Hight Jr., and he served in the N.C. State Highway Patrol. Doris and Henry were married until his untimely death in 1962. Doris was blessed to find a second love, Donald R. Thurkill, and they were married for 46 years before his death in 2012. Doris had a number of vocations throughout the years, including work at Belk in Sanford, as a dental assistant to Dr. P.E. Cotter in Sanford, and the position she most enjoyed -- secretary at Flat Springs Baptist Church. Doris loved her Flat Springs Baptist Church family. She especially loved her Sunday School class and participating in the Senior Adult Ministry. She was proud to be a Christian and enjoyed listening to gospel music. Doris loved her family and was especially proud of her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Minter and husband Tilla of Sanford; son, R.V. Hight and wife Bunnie of Sanford; grandchildren, Christopher Hight and wife Jenni of Morrisville, and Holly Hight and Jordan Minter, both of Sanford; sister-in-law, Ethel Thurkill of Shelby; and nieces and nephews. Arrangements were handled by Bridges Cameron Funeral Home of Sanford, NC. Services were held at Flat Springs Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
