Status - Well maintained. Mrs. Engstrom's group surveyed the cemetery in 1973. In the mid-1980s another survey of the graves was made in connection with the 1988 deeding of the cemetery from the University of North Carolina to the Town of Chapel Hill. In 1990 a study of the cemetery was compiled by David & Terri Swanson; please see: Old Chapel Hill Cemetery: Directory and Inventory, (Chapel Hill, NC: Town of Chapel Hill, Oct 1990, call num: "R929.5 Old" in the Chapel Hill Library). In 1996 there was restoration of some of the older areas by the historical and preservation societies. At that time Mr. Dean Ruedrich, a cemetery restoration expert, restored gravesites and a number of broken gravestones (See "The Chapel Hill News," Sunday, July 21, 1996, p. A1). The cemetery is essentially full, with a very few gravesites still available to current plot owners. On 12 October 2005 a roughly one-acre site on land owned by the university at the east end of the cemetery was set aside as a "Memorial Grove" for the spreading or burial of ashes. It offers an option for alumni, employees and Carolina supporters wanting to rest forever on the university's grounds.

In September 2016, a new monument was unveiled in the Black Sections of this cemetery in Rememberance of the African Americans in unmarked graves buried here. The large stone reads: "Thus we like birds retreat to groves, and hide from ev'ry eye, Our slumbr'ing dust will rise and meet its morning in the sky," by George Moses Horton, enslaved poet and intellectual. The monument is beside the North-South walkway at the east side of the black section. View of the monument.
