Wife of 1) Loomis Talmadge Burke and 2) Talmadge Goldston. Esther Virginia Thorne Burke, beloved mother, grandmother, wife, nurse, teacher, church leader, and community volunteer, died at her home in Goldston, NC. She was 85. Born near Selma, NC, she was the seventh child of Martin and Violet McCall Thorne. She is preceded in death by her husband, of more than 30 years, Loomis Talmadge Burke. She is also preceded in death by her second husband Talmadge Goldston. She leaves behind three children and their families: a daughter, Betsy E. Burke and a son-in-law, David Nash; grandsons, Burke 19 and Andrew 17 of Arlington, VA and Carl of Chicago; her son, James L. Burke and daughter-in-law Linda; grandsons, Bryan 19 and Tyler 19 of Raleigh; and her son, Joseph A. Burke and daughter-in-law, Lisa; grandsons, Hayden 19, Carter 17, Banks 15 and Amanda of Goldston and Brandon of Cary. She also leaves behind her sister, Dorothy Thorne Faulkner and brother-in-law, James Faulkner of Wilson; her sister-in-law, Eunice Thorne of Anderson, SC; her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Burke Horton of Zebulon, NC; and numerous nephews and nieces. She will be remembered for her love for her family, her compassion, and her commitment and service to others. From 1963 until 1986, she was an instructor and shortly thereafter director of the licensed practical nursing program at Central Carolina Technical Institute (now Central Carolina Community College) (CCCC), helping to transform the program to the present associate degree nursing program. She has been credited with exposing students to an aspect of nursing often overlooked: a caring love for patients. Among nurses, she is described as the "nurse's nurse", a leader in time of need. Prior to teaching nursing, she worked as a hospital staff nurse, nurse supervisor and office nurse and stayed at home with her children for several years focusing on church and community service. She has been active and held various leadership positions in the Goldston United Methodist Church, Goldston Women's Club, the Red Cross, the state and national nursing associations, PTA, high school programs for band and sports boosters, and Hospice of Chatham County. Following her retirement from teaching nursing, she continued as an avid volunteer, particularly for hospice, Meals-On-Wheels and the Chatham County-Orange County Food Bank. Among various church work, she taught adult Sunday school, served in various offices for the District United Methodist Women and the District Board of Missions, participated in church mission work in Jamaica, and was named Lay Leader of the Year for the multi-county Sanford District of the United Methodist Church. She has also been recognized by various community and civic groups, including scholarships in her name at CCCC and Chatham Central High School in past years. She attended Peace College, graduated with her Nursing Degree from Rex College, Raleigh and continued to study Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania while working as a nurse in Philadelphia. She later earned a Teaching Degree at Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina. Her love for people, especially patients and those in need, is exemplified by more than forty years in nursing and more than twenty years as a teacher. In her leisure time, she enjoyed her bridge club, her large extended family, sharing her talent for cooking, and her seven grandsons. Arrangements were handled by Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, NC. The funeral was held at the Goldston United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
