092 JONES FAMILY
Location - from Cary: take Walnut St. to the intersection of Tryon Rd. and Holly Springs Rd. Walnut St. ends here and Holly Springs Rd. begins. Stay on Holly Springs Rd. until it intersects with Penney Rd., turn left and go about 1/2 mile, on the right side of the road on a curve there is this small, triangular walled cemetery.
Surveyed by Shirley Olson on October 22, 2000.
There is a roofed shelter with a wrought iron fence around it over the largest monument. The wall is about 40" high with a gate. There is ample room to park, however, it is private property as the Jones family live in a house sitting far back from the cemetery. It is a lovely site, shaded by big oaks, sitting on a rise and well tended.
There have been members of the Jones families in Wake County since 1749 and their history is entwined with Wake County's. For those with an interest in the Jones families I recommend "Around and About Cary", by Thomas Byrd, illustrated by Jerry Miller, for a brief but impressive introduction to the Jones history, complete with sketches and family tree. This is only one of several Jones burial sites.
