024    NEW BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH [Memorial Gardens]

Location - Originally on the north side of Crest Street, the 1068 graves were moved by the State Department of Transportation to New Bethel Memorial Gardens, 2619 West Pettigrew Street; Glenview Cemetery at intersection of NC 55 and Riddle Road; and Beechwood Cemetery at intersection of Fayetteville Street and Cornwallis Road.

      Coordinates: 36d 00m 58.0s N; 78d 56m 29.0s W Click here for Online Maps

This church was also known as 'Hickstown.' The New Bethel cemetery is maintained and in use and contains at least 75 of the moved graves, marked but many unidentified. Canvassed by Jean B. Anderson and W. A. Waller (1983).

'Hickstown' was the burial place for many blacks who worked in the cotton mill. However, many whites were buried here in the 1900's prior to World War I. Both church and cemetery were in the path of the Durham Expressway, highway 147. View of the cemetery sign.

Pictures of gravestones provided by Ellen Kerley in December 2003. Additional pictures by Allen Dew in March 2008.
