297    ALEXANDER FAMILY

Location - off Pea Ridge Rd about 3.1 miles east of Hwy 32.

Directions: take Pea Ridge Road, SR 1302, 3.1 miles East of Rt. 32.

3133 Pea Ridge Road was likely the dwelling site of Zephaniah Powell Alexander and Nancy Norman Alexander as a deed shows he owned this property. The dwelling then went to their son, Nehemiah Harrison Alexander and Allie Bell Swain Alexander, and then to their son, Alvin Alexander and Lucy Pritchard Alexander until 1941. This dwelling was burned down by the fire department (there is a picture of this dwelling). The front of this dwelling faced west, and was approximately 300 feet south of the grave site.

3179 Pea Ridge Road is the property of Sarah and Gary Mullenex, and the grave site of whom we assume is that of Zephaniah Powell Alexander and others since this property was owned by him. Zephaniah Powell Alexander was born Jan 31, 1830 and died Aug 13, 1900 (from family Bible) has a tombstone at this site that is a standard government Union Civil War issue with the inscription Co. C 1st North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Zephaniah Powell Alexander, age 31, served three years in the Union Army and was wounded in the head and hospitalized in Beaufort, North Carolina. Nancy Norman Alexander, born Aug 18, 1842 died 13 March 1922 (from death register), is buried in this plot. An eye witness of the burial, a granddaughter Mary Alexander Koenig, said her grandmother was buried in this plot in an unmarked grave. There is also the possibility that Hattye Earnestine Deshields, age 12, is buried in this plot. Earnestine was visiting her grandmother at the time of her death and was never returned home. Also, the Union tombstone of Abram Swain with the same Union inscription lies in this plot and most likely that of his wife.

3247 Pea Ridge Road, now the Melson dwelling, is the former dwelling of Jordan Alexander and Mary Alexander.
